Here's How It Works:
-
Pick a completely normal object from real life.
-
Pretend you’re a salesperson from a fantasy, sci-fi, or alien world trying to sell it.
-
Explain what it is, how it works, and why it’s revolutionary in that world—even if it’s totally mundane to us.
The object I chose: Umbrella
My Setting: A medieval fantasy realm where weather is controlled by angry sky spirits.
“Behold! The Skydome of Calmtide!”
Are you tired of being drenched by the relentless wrath of the Cloud Lords? Sick of soggy scrolls and damp tunics ruining your market strolls? Then rejoice, traveler, for the Guild of Unorthodox Inventions presents: the Skydome of Calmtide!
Forged from the hide of a celestial bat and bound with flexible bones of the Wind Serpent, this elegant dome-shaped shield springs forth at your command. With the mere push of a button—yes, BUTTON!—the Skydome expands, creating an invisible pact between you and the weather spirits. They’ll pour their fury upon the masses, while you remain untouched, protected by ancient craftsmanship and subtle bribes built into the enchantments.
Worried about portability? Fear not! When the sun dares return, the Skydome folds down into a charming wand-sized rod—perfect for strapping to your belt or hiding in your boot.
Available in three finishes: Raven Night, Sunset Blood, and Arcane Beige.
This exercise is a ridiculous amount of fun because it flips your brain into worldbuilding mode without starting from scratch. It takes something boring and forces you to look at it with weird, magical, or futuristic eyes.
You end up building tech, lore, and tone—all in one shot. Try it with something basic like a stapler, a spoon, or a flashlight. I promise you’ll surprise yourself.
