My Design Journey

My Journey as a Designer

Seeing as my journey as a designer is still on going, my story will project into the future I'm working towards. And now to:

The Beginning:

My design journey started in middle school, almost a decade ago, this is when my brain was in full creativity mode. I didn't get to take art class until my 8th grade year so little 6th grade me had to learn how to improve my drawing skills all on my own. Now, realistically, my design journey didn't start until a few years later, toward the beginning of high school. However, I consider my middle school years as my creative awakening. It was at this time when I created my favorite original character, first named Bulb and later changed to Lipsoidal. If you couldn't tell he's has light based powers and his "new" name, Lipsoidal, is based off special, super powerful pieces of theatrical lighting equipment called ellipsoidal. Where was I going with this you ask? You see one of my biggest reasons for joining the graphic arts program was to become a animator so I could create a story around my character and animate it. But anyway moving on to:

Later in the beginning:

High school is where I began learning about video editing. However, poor little Joel with his broke behind, couldn't afford expensive editing software like adobe, and didn't feel like asking his parents, so I did research on free editing programs I could learning basic editing on my phone. The software I ended up getting was called CapCut and, for about 4 years, I used CapCut for any video editing I wanted to do and I made some pretty cool stuff for 14/15 year old me.

To me these things were the pinnacle of comedy, so I showed them to my friends and they also thought they were, in fact, the pinnacle of comedy. This, at the time, was enough to satisfy me. Making and editing little videos of me playing STUPID, POORLY DESIGNED gacha games on my phone, slowly getting better at it overtime, was enough for to keep me content and happy.

Currently:

In September of last year, I started my journey as a professional graphic designer. However, I don't believe I made that much progress. Whilst, yes I have learned about adobe and have a basic understanding of every program we've worked with so far, I've been distracted and fixated on other things that I neglected my duty to study and practice these programs. I also had a extremely bad habit of putting things off until the last minute, most of the time too much, not being able to finish everything and scraping by with a passing grade. I was looking to be jaw-droppingly great at this graphic designer stuff but looking at my current level even after all this time in this class is extremely sad to see. Not to mention because I never really strayed outside my comfort zone, designer-wise, my designer voice didn't really evolve. That leads us to:

My future:

I want to get better, so I have decided that from now onward I will work on myself and my skills to shape my future to one where I am better. Working hard to ensure that future me can look back and only hate me for not working harder sooner.

My Design Journey (Part 2)

I believe the best format to tell my story is through a voice over video. This would be a 1-2 minute video that would be me telling my story, in the background I would have clips of projects I’ve made in the past and some video games clips I could edit in the future. This is because these things I feel are uniquely special to me and videos in this style aren’t uncommon for me.
